Overview

The museum is housed in the ancient Convent of the Madre de Deus, founded in 1509, and allows a journey through the history of the azulejo, from the 15th century to the present.

Highlights

The National Museum of Azulejo is one of the most important national museums, for its unusual collection, the Azulejo, an important artistic expression of Portuguese culture, and for the extraordinary building where it is housed, in the ancient Convento della Madre de Deus, founded in 1509 by Queen Dona Leonor. His collections allow a journey through the history of the azulejo, from the fifteenth century to the present. The church of the Madre de Deus, one of the greatest examples of Portuguese baroque, is richly decorated with gilded carvings, paintings and azulejos.
