Cala Violina

Overview

Cala Violina is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Maremma, clear sand, crystal clear sea and unspoiled nature of the nature reserve.

It overlooks a dense and lush Mediterranean vegetation. The beach is clear and grainy, composed of very small quartz grains. The singular name derives from the sound that emits the sand when you walk on it, which reminds one of the violin (to feel it, however, a certain quietness is essential). Its waters are limpidissime and the wonderful panorama is completed by the dense and evocative Mediterranean scrub that arrives right on the beach.

There are no bathing establishments, however in the summer, before arriving on the beach you will find a kiosk with fresh drinks and sandwiches. The beach is not very large, so in high season it is crowded. In the pine forest in front of the beach, you will find wooden tables and benches for a snack in the shade of pine trees. If you are a sportsman, the path behind the beach runs for several miles along the coast, it is a bit 'tiring but very nice.

If you are in Maremma outside the bathing season, take a walk in Cala Violina, you will appreciate the most authentic beauty. Even in the winter months, on sunny days, you will want to dive.

Highlights

Cala Violina beach is located between Follonica and Punta Ala (both about 10 km away), within the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve.

How to get to Cala Violina?

You can reach it by two routes: from the side of the Puntone by bike (rather tiring) along a wonderful path after entering the bar of Portiglioni (just after the port of Scarlino); or more easily from the Pian d'alma side, where you can drive along the provincial road 158, by car or motorbike, just follow the signs. From SP 158 you will enter a dirt path that you will travel for about 1 km and then you will find the parking lot. However, consider that the beach of Cala Violina is located within a nature reserve, and parking for cars and motorcycles is limited, so it is advisable to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon, to avoid finding the complete parking and wait for someone to come out. Once you have parked the car, to access the beach you have to walk a 1.5 km long path in the pine forest, it takes 20 to 30 minutes, comfortable shoes are recommended.
